1. Our approach: local-first by default

HanLingo is built around a simple idea: you can start learning immediately, without creating an account. By default, your learning progress, daily streak, vocabulary, and settings are stored in your browser's local storage on your own device. They are not uploaded to our servers unless you actively choose an optional sync or account feature (described below).

2. Information we collect

2.1 Data that stays on your device

Learning progress, completed sentences, streak history, vocabulary, and app settings.
This data is written to local storage (and, when available, IndexedDB) on the device or browser you use, and can be cleared at any time from the Progress panel ("Clear local data").

2.2 Data we may collect only if you opt in

Email address — collected only if you choose to save your progress for cross-device sync, receive account-related messages, or make a purchase. Purpose: sending you a "magic link" to log in and sync your progress, processing your purchase, and sending essential product or billing messages. No marketing emails unless you opt in. We do not sell or rent your email.
Payment information — processed by our payment provider (e.g. Stripe). We do not see or store your full card number.
Audio playback — all sentence audio on HanLingo is generated by an AI text-to-speech model using a native male voice, tuned for slow / normal / fast playback. No human voice recordings are used or collected.

Retention of email address: We keep an email address you provide for as long as your account/sync is active, or as required for billing and legal obligations (e.g. tax records for purchases). If you stop using the account and request deletion, we delete it within 30 days.

2.3 Technical and analytics data

If we enable analytics in the future, we will collect only aggregated, non-identifying usage signals (e.g. which packs are popular) and will disclose this here before doing so.

3. How we use information

To provide, maintain, and improve the HanLingo service.
To authenticate you and sync your progress when you opt into an account.
To process payments and provide customer support.
To communicate product or billing updates you've opted into.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for advertising.

4. Cookies and local storage

HanLingo primarily uses browser local storage, not cookies, to remember your progress and preferences. If we later integrate third-party analytics or payment services, their cookies are governed by their own policies and are described in our Cookie Policy.

5. Sharing and third parties

We share data only where necessary to operate the service, with the following categories of recipients, and only to the extent required: (a) payment processors; (b) email/infrastructure providers (if you opt into sync or account features); (c) analytics providers (only aggregated data, if enabled). Each is bound by contractual obligations to protect your data.

6. Data retention and your controls

Device-local data: you can export a JSON backup and clear it at any time from the Progress panel ("Export JSON" / "Clear local data").
Email address (if you opt in): retained while your sync/account is active or as required for billing and legal obligations. You can remove it by clearing your local data, or request deletion by emailing us; we will delete server-side copies within 30 days.
Server-side data (only if you opt into an account): you may request deletion by emailing us; we will delete it within 30 days.
You can request a copy of any personal data we hold about you.

7. Children

HanLingo is intended for adult professionals and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

8. Security

We use appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect the limited data we process, including encrypted transmission (HTTPS) and restricted access to any server-side records.

9. International transfers

If you are located outside Singapore, the limited data we may process (email address if you opt in, payment processing) may be transferred to and processed in Singapore or the jurisdictions of our service providers, in accordance with applicable law.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the updated version here and revise the "Last updated" date. Material changes will be highlighted on the HanLingo site.
